[ # ] Boo-freakin-hoo: Malkin and Coulter
June 14th, 2006 under Christianity, Hypocrisy, Politics, Rant, Walking Like Jesus

boo Michelle Malkin’s reaction to suicides at Gitmo? Boo-freakin-hoo! Ann Coulter’s latest book slams widows of 9/11 victims. All this and “Christians” continue to watch Fox and claim to believe in the sanctity of life and hold the moral high ground on all issues. I think I’ll follow Tony Norman’s lead and publicly state that I am not a Christian.

To live in a country where Coulter can spread her hate and call herself a “Christian” without blanket condemnation from “Christian” leaders is to live in a country where the traditional term “Christian” has no meaning. To see someone’s response to the death of three persons loved by God and created in God’s image as “boo-freakin-hoo” and not be outraged is to demonstrate a total misunderstanding of the grace of God revealed in the life and death of Jesus Christ.

So… Am I a follower of Jesus? Yes. A Christian? No. That term is now offensive to me. Real Christians cannot stand by and let hatred reign in the name of their Savior. Christians must stand up for the sanctity of all life.

I do so love your rants! I’m with you, on this one.

[ # 2019 ] Comment from D.R. Randle [June 14, 2006, 8:09 am]

I am not sure where it is now, but there was an editorial on the front page of the FoxNews site a couple of days ago bashing Coulter’s statements about the 9/11 widows. Also, there was a discussion some time back about Coulter on Tim Ellsworth’s website in which many Christians expressed their irritation at Coulter’s methods and speech. And on the Michael Medved show last week, Medved couldn’t get anyone to comment on the content of Coulter’s new book because all anyone wanted to talk about was how much they couldn’t stand some of her comments and the way she spoke to others.

When searching for information on the SBC annual meeting this week, I ran across a lot of blogs that bashed Southern Baptists and Evangelicals for not reacting to this or that (a huge issue was raised with some new Left Behind video game that I had not even heard about until I read about how I should be denouncing it on some guys blog), but what I think many people fail to realize is that most Christians don’t pay much attention to this kind of thing. Joe Kennedy brought an issue like this up concerning Fred Phelps and Pat Robertson. He asked, why don’t Christians condemn these folks more. I made several statements as to why I thought that Christians did not, but it basically came down to the fact that in the end Christians don’t care as much about politics as they let on. Sure, Evangelicals care about issues that effect them, but other than that, they could care less, and thus it often comes across as an endorsement of nutty right wingers who they really have nothing in common with.

And therein lies the problem with any Christians engaging too much in politics. Folks like me get lumped in with people like Coulter and guys like you get associated with Howard Dean, though we probably could care less about either one of them. Still, just because we engage in any sort of partisan politics we are immediately called to account for all sorts of stuff that we had nothing to do with and often times know nothing about. Political pandering requires us to compromise the message of Jesus Christ and that is something Christians should never put themselves in a position to have to do.

Amen, DR.

Also, I’m glad you didn’t take issue with Howie’s decision not to refer to himself as a Christian. I’ve been teetering on that line for a while now.

I wish it meant what it did at first- “little Christ”- whether meant mockingly or not. But it doesn’t seem to reflect that anymore.

DR,
Good stuff as usual. You’re right about stereotyping. I know your usually to the right of me and that doesn’t mean you are a Bill O’Reilly loving jerk any more than I’m a Janine Garofalo groupie. It just ticks me off when the issue becomes a “Christian” one.

I cut most folks a lot of slack until it comes to being mean. (That’s why it’s important for me to be surrounded by folks like you and Joe–y’all call me on it when I’m being mean.) Was Bush’s leading us into Iraq a terrible thing? I think so. However, I believe he is a sincere guy who’s trying to do what he thinks is right. That’s why I don’t question his “Christianity.”

I’m just troubled by the fact that so many “Christians” don’t have the ability to think critically and be critical of those who hold to some of their beliefs but do some pretty awful things. I know this isn’t everybody, but it’s a lot.

Take for instance the polls. Americans pretty much support anybody as long as the economy is good and gas prices are low. My guess is that if gas was $1.50 a gallon, Bush’s approval rating would be in the 60s.

Well, that’s enough for now. Thanks for your thoughts!
