Ashley reminded me of why I hate Chicago so much. If we win, I’ll be more glad that we beat Chicago than if we get in the playoffs.

Howie’s Favorite Bloggers
December 21st, 2007 under New Orleans. [ Comments: 2 ]

Here’s a list of my favorite blogs for 2007. I refuse to rank them or offer a top 10 list.

Grrrl meets world-Becky is smart, funny, and has a pretty good mix of posts. I get a lot of interesting stuff from her.

On the Homefront-Really want to support the troups? Take a look at this very helpful blog.

Mainstream Baptist- Bruce has some incredible stuff about Baptists, but more importantly about politics. I can’t seem to comment on his blog. It’s very hard because he has to screen all the right-wing crazies, but he’s very timely.

Jordon Cooper-Greatest information about cool stuff. Religion. Sports. Great links!

SBC Outpost-Nice info from a group of Baptists. The comments sections are often hilarious!

Dangerblond-This New Orleans chick is funny and a great source of information about what’s going on in New Orleans.

Ashley Morris-Often says things the way I’d like to say them. He’s as abrasive as he is funny. Very entertaining stuff. He’s also a great guy who helped me out a lot with some advice about lowering my property tax even though we’ve met only once.

Adrastos-Also a funny New Orleanian with a lot of info about New Orleans. He’ll usually link to all the good stuff about a certain issue. Plus—he sent me a Christmas CD.

Joe Kennedy is an NOBTS student that is a really nice guy. He also takes great pictures.

Michael Homan- chronicles his life. A really good friend of mine and all around good guy.

B-a big variety of stories and experiences here. He’s got a huge following. Love to keep up with his and Xy’s life.

Oyster’s kind of a legend. Really great New Orleans stuff.

Doggy Style-Very funny and unusual stuff.

Cool Tools-always has some really cool stuff.

I left out many of the New Orleans bloggers. They do a great job.

Thanks to the above for informing me, making me laugh, and challenging me.

Lyrics:
Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let’s pretend we’re just two people and
You’re not better than me.
I’d like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why?

Dear Mr. President,
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
How can you say
No child is left behind?
We’re not dumb and we’re not blind.
They’re all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell.

What kind of father would take his own daughter’s rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You’ve come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?

Let me tell you ’bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you ’bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you ’bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you ’bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don’t know nothing ’bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Dear Mr. President,
You’d never take a walk with me.
Would you?

The Economic Consequences of Bush
December 11th, 2007 under poor, Bush. [ Comments: 1 ]

bush.jpgFrom Nobel laureate, Joseph E. Stiglitz:

Up to now, the conventional wisdom has been that Herbert Hoover, whose policies aggravated the Great Depression, is the odds-on claimant for the mantle “worst president” when it comes to stewardship of the American economy. Once Franklin Roosevelt assumed office and reversed Hoover’s policies, the country began to recover. The economic effects of Bush’s presidency are more insidious than those of Hoover, harder to reverse, and likely to be longer-lasting. There is no threat of America’s being displaced from its position as the world’s richest economy. But our grandchildren will still be living with, and struggling with, the economic consequences of Mr. Bush.

Some 5.3 million more Americans are living in poverty now than were living in poverty when Bush became president. America’s class structure may not have arrived there yet, but it’s heading in the direction of Brazil’s and Mexico’s.

Jesus Is Rollin’
December 8th, 2007 under Christianity, Walking Like Jesus, Christian Crap, Tacky. [ Comments: none ]

Luke 9:23-24 (NIV) Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.”

Don’t think this is what Jesus meant…

blessin.jpg

They see me rollin’
They hatin’
Patrollin’
And tryin’. to catch me ridin’. dirty.

These $1,100 rims courtesy of DUB are called Blessinem.

If Jesus was in a grave, he’d be rollin’ in it right now!

Luke 6:20-26
20Looking at his disciples, he said:
Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.

21Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
22Blessed are you when men hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

23″Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets.
24“But woe to you who are rich,
for you have already received your comfort.

25Woe to you who are well fed now,
for you will go hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.
26Woe to you when all men speak well of you,
for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.

Hot Dang I Won Something!
December 8th, 2007 under Humor, New Orleans, Friends. [ Comments: 2 ]

Big month for me! Some Nigerian dude is sending me millions! Guess I’ll be able to pay off all my credit cards after Christmas.

I also won my own Adrastos Christmas mix CD! I actually have to share it (don’t know how that’s going to work) with Oyster. Adrastos held a contest to caption the picture below:
trash.jpg

It’s a picture of NOLA Sanitation Director Veronica White and Sidney Torres, owner of SDT Waste and Debris Services.

My entry:
“Whitney Houston stars as the airhead lawyer who can’t tell the truth but fights for her smarmy client (played by Antonio Banderas) based on John Grisham’s latest The Street Sweeper. A thriller about the seedy trash business in New Orleans.”

Oyster’s entry:
“I am SO GLAD I stopped flipping boutique FQ hotels so I could ride black trucks and listen to Veronica drone on about why she doesn’t need to pay me.”

Thanks Adrastos! When my money from the Nigerian prince gets here I’ll buy you lunch!

The Devil and Mr Darwin
December 7th, 2007 under Christianity, Christian Crap, God. [ Comments: none ]

devil.jpgIt seems most of my cool stuff comes via Becky, one of my favorite bloggers. Here’s another one from Reuters:

More Americans believe in a literal hell and the devil than Darwin’s theory of evolution, according to a new Harris poll released on Thursday.

It is the latest survey to highlight America’s deep level of religiosity, a cultural trait that sets it apart from much of the developed world.

The poll of 2,455 U.S. adults from Nov 7 to 13 found that 82 percent of those surveyed believed in God, a figure unchanged since the question was asked in 2005.

It further found that 79 percent believed in miracles, 75 percent in heaven, while 72 percent believed that Jesus is God or the Son of God. Belief in hell and the devil was expressed by 62 percent.

Darwin’s theory of evolution met a far more skeptical audience which might surprise some outsiders as the United States is renowned for its excellence in scientific research.

Only 42 percent of those surveyed said they believed in Darwin’s theory which largely informs how biology and related sciences are approached.

You may want to look here for various opinions by religious leaders concerning evolution. I know I won’t change any minds, but what the heck.

In looking around the internets I just realized that when I went to the national meeting of the American Academy of Religion in San Diego a few weeks ago to present a paper, I missed an opportunity to sit in a scholarly discussion about the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Crap!

I guess I’m not really on the cutting edge of Religious Studies.

George W Bush: Her Only President
December 5th, 2007 under Politics, Peace. [ Comments: 1 ]

New Orleans ProtestI was reading about Al Franken’s run for the Senate this morning and a quote really hit me.

“Some don’t remember that a president can be articulate. They don’t remember that the federal government worked. And the saddest thing was that they don’t remember that our country was well respected around the world.”

W is really the only president my daughter has ever known. Wow. What a shame. My other kids had the privilege of knowing another president. My oldest learned a bit early about a particular kind of sex (his granny reads this so it’s censored) thanks to Clinton.

I guess all presidents have their flaws. It would be nice to have one that I could be truly proud of. I know. I’m a dreamer.

I had Richard Nixon. Hmmm. I also had Jimmy Carter. Many folks say that he was a terrible president. I guess it depends on your priorities. He stood for peace. I think he was a pretty honest guy. He was an outsider. Guess I’ve always appreciated that.

Sorry Shirley Jr. Guess you’ll have to find your role models somewhere else.
