[ # ] Hate Crime Law: What If You Are Intimidating?
December 4th, 2007 under New Orleans

DSC05308The New Orleans City Council will probably approve a hate crime bill on Thursday. According to T-P:

Displays of nooses, swastikas, burning crosses or other “hate symbols” deliberately meant to intimidate others will become crimes under a proposal headed for the City Council Thursday.

The proposal by Council President Arnie Fielkow will almost certainly pass unanimously, said Councilwoman Shelley Midura, who chaired a Monday committee hearing taking testimony on the bill.

The proposed ordinance would make displays of the three specific symbols, plus the display of “any symbol” meant to intimidate punishable by a fine of $500 and six months in jail.

Isn’t this pic of my friend Michael pretty intimidating? Look at those guns and the cool tat! What if I want to become a Jain? Can I include my sacred symbols on my scooter?

I know that my Saints stickers won’t qualify as intimidating, but what about my LSU stuff?
logo.jpgCan the Southern Baptist Logo above be considered a symbol of hate? Many Southern Baptists believe homosexuality is a sin. If this logo is on a church, is it considered a hate crime?

What about gang graffiti? Mean bumper stickers?

If believing that homosexuality is a sin is a hate crime, then the peace sign will have to be outlawed as well, since it indicates that the wearer believes that fighting in wars is a sin, so it must be a hate crime against soldiers.
