Church Challenge: Have Sex Every Day! |
| February 27th, 2008 under Christian Crap, Christianity, Controversial? Sites, Walking Like Jesus, sex. [ Comments: none ]
I may be blogging a bit less for a while. Thanks to Church Marketing Sucks, I found out about this:
Here’s an interesting tidbit about a church campaign to promote, well, sexuality and um, effective sexual habits. (And their current series, of course.) Here’s the skinny:
* Married couples: Have sex daily for 30 days.
* Singles: No sex for you. Not even in a committed relationship. At least for 30 days.
* Everyone: Follow with Relevant Church in their series and study guide for a month.
Obviously, this is generating attention like crazy.
You can read more about the 30 day sex challenge here. What is it with churches and sex lately?
Wow. Praise Jesus and TEVO American Idol!

California Republicans Are Going to Hell! |
| February 25th, 2008 under Hypocrisy, Politics, poor. [ Comments: none ]
From The Democratic Party:
California Republicans successfully thwarted an attempt to close the tax loophole for yacht owners. (It was described in the Sacramento Bee as “a loophole that allows purchasers of boats, motor homes and airplanes to take possession outside the state’s boundaries and avoid California sales taxes if they leave it out of state for a specified period.”)
Assembly Republicans defeated a bill that would close the so-called “sloop hole” that allows owners of yachts and private planes to dodge a use-tax by parking the vehicles out of state for the first three months after purchase.
California loses an estimated $26 million a year because of the current law…
Currently, the state is facing a $14 billion budget deficit. To give you a sense of the misplaced priorities, while California Republicans were protecting yacht owners, hundreds of disabled and seniors rallied at the State Capitol to protest 18 percent cuts to the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS).
Local activists have bombarded the state GOP with calls. When they turned off their phones, they found other ways to voice their displeasure.
Serving the rich and screwing the poor! Great job folks! Those aren’t the family values Jesus likes.
The Sheep and the Goats
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
“He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
My Birthday |
| February 25th, 2008 under Food, Holidaze, New Orleans, Shirley. [ Comments: none ]
My birthday was Saturday. As I get older, I really begin to dread them. I was a bit down because I wouldn’t be able to eat at Jacques Imo’s because I had to attend a wedding.
The wife and I scootered over to the French Quarter to check out the 3D street art and buy me a cool summer hat. The 3D thing wasn’t really that impressive until I looked at the pictures I took when I got home. The 3D effect was not easy to see in person. I went to Shushan’s and Meyer the Hatter but I didn’t really find one that I couldn’t do without. I’m hoping more summer hats will arrive soon.
We then went on over to Liuzza’s on Bienville for lunch. Had to get the fried pickles and the frosty beer. It really kind of made my day (in addition to getting to scooter around with the wife!). It reminded me what a wonderful city I live in. You really can’t find places to eat anywhere else like you can in New Orleans!
Although going to a wedding isn’t my idea of fun, it turned out to be really cool! I had never been inside St Louis Cathedral. Wow!
After the wedding we second-lined over to Pat O’s on the River for free food and drinks. I have to tell you. Being in a second-line that stops traffic on Decatur Street is too cool! People were waving and taking pictures of us. It was great!
It turned out to be a really good birthday after all. Thanks Carol!
Whitey Tighties for Gay Men? |
| February 22nd, 2008 under Humor, homosexuality. [ Comments: 1 ]
I usually only give Christians a hard time for their stupidity, but if a Jew wants to say something stupid I’ll call him on it too!
From The Daily Star:
An ultra-Orthodox member of Israel’s Parliament on Wednesday blamed homosexuals for last week’s earthquake that shook his country and the region.
Speaking at a parliamentary committee on preparedness for quakes, Shas MP Shlomo Benizri lashed out at homosexuality, considered an abomination under Jewish law and in its religious text, the Gemara.
“We are looking for earthly solutions, how to prevent them,” Benizri said. “I have another way to prevent earthquakes. The Gemara says that one of the reasons earthquakes happen - which the Knesset [Parliament] legitimizes - is homosexuality.”
“God says you shake your genitals where you are not supposed to and I will shake my world in order to wake you up,” he added.
Should gay men be required to wear Whitey tighties so that their genitals won’t shake? I’m just askin’.
It’s Hard to Stay Sane in New Orleans |
| February 16th, 2008 under Hypocrisy, Jindal, Louisiana, New Orleans, Politics, Rant. [ Comments: none ]
Last night I saw Charles Barkley slam the local, state, and federal recovery of New Orleans. Thanks Charles! For you who are not from here, it’s hard to understand why we stay here and what we are going through. Just look at our idiot mayor above.
Remember my entry about our new ethics reform-minded Governor?
Well look at this from WWLTV:
Even as a special session on ethics called by Governor Bobby Jindal aims to end the practice of free sports and even tickets being given to legislators a report has surfaced that Jindal’s Chief of Staff recently accepted free tickets to the Hannah Montana concert in New Orleans.
WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge reports that Chief of Staff Timmy Teeple and several legislators accepted free tickets for the show, which had sold out to the public in a matter of minutes.
The report says that the tickets were for the governor’s suite inside of the Arena.
Jindal gave a brief response Thursday.
‘Bottom line, we’re gonna follow the law like everybody else. We proposed sweeping changes in the law. We’re saying legislators shouldn’t be getting lavish meals. We’ve said the same things on free tickets from people being able to influence elected or appointed leaders, that’s why we’re going through this session to get the bills done to change the way business is done in Louisiana.â€
There is currently nothing illegal about accepting the tickets, though proposed legislation is attempting to have that changed.
I’m gettin’ on my scooter and going to the Quarter to look for tall guys so I can take their pictures!

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Leases Land to the Republican Party! |
| February 13th, 2008 under Baptists, Christian Crap, ChristianWalk, Christianity, Church and State, Hypocrisy, Politics, Walking Like Jesus, violence. [ Comments: 5 ]
There’s currently a lawsuit filed against Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary by a former female Old Testament prof who was fired by seminary president Paige Patterson. She charges that Patterson discriminated against her because she is a woman. Not surprisingly, she argues that when Patterson became president of SWBTS, he assured her that her job was safe, only to fire her later. Patterson lie? How can that be.
Equally disturbing as the fact that Patterson was quoted the following about women, “everyone should own one.” A phrase every Southerner knows used to be said about African-Americans (and probably still is)…is the fact that the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary leases property to the Republican Party. I can’t imagine how many of my Baptist forefathers and foremothers are rolling over in their graves right now. Misogyny—-yeah that’s terrible, but not really too unexpected. Church state issues—wow! But I’m honestly not too surprised.
Here’s a link to the lawsuit.
Here’s a link to discussion about the lawsuit at the SBC Outpost. The comments there are always a hoot!
Nevermind! Don’t waste your time at the Outpost. Not one reaction to the seminary leasing to the Republican Party.
Seems only Bruce Prescott and a guy named Mark Gstohl really care about the church/state issue.
Why We Shouldn’t Be Hatin’ the Immigrants |
| February 9th, 2008 under Racism. [ Comments: 1 ]
I’m currently reviewing a manuscript for a publisher. It’s a text about German Baptists (something I know quite a bit about!). One stat that just jumped out at me is from a 1916 census of religious bodies in America. 132 of the 200 denominations in the US reported that part or all of their congregations used a language other than English. The Baptists had over 20 foreign-speaking conferences, Methodists 22, Roman Catholics 42.
That’s less than 100 years ago!
We’re Not a Christian Nation |

According to a recent Barna survey, 83% of persons polled identified themselves as Christians. Interestingly, only 49% of these individuals described themselves as absolutely committed to Christianity (whatever that means!).
A CNN poll revealed that 69% of Americans surveyed believe waterboarding is torture, but 58% said that waterboarding should be allowed.
God help us!
