My Incoming Freshmen
August 19th, 2008 under New Orleans. [ Comments: 1 ]

LoganEach year at this time, the Beloit College Mindset List is available to help college professors better understand the incoming freshmen. Since my middle kid is heading off to LSU Thursday, the list isn’t quite as helpful to me as it might be to others. Here are a few highlights of the list. You can find the whole list here.

Students entering college for the first time this fall were generally born in 1990.

• Sammy Davis Jr., Jim Henson, Ryan White, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Freddy Krueger have always been dead.
• They have always been looking for Carmen Sandiego.
• Coke and Pepsi have always used recycled plastic bottles
• Gas stations have never fixed flats, but most serve cappuccino.
• WWW has never stood for World Wide Wrestling.
• Films have never been X rated, only NC-17.
• Clarence Thomas has always sat on the Supreme Court.
• IBM has never made typewriters.
• Wayne Newton has never had a mustache.
• There have always been gay rabbis.
• Caller ID has always been available on phones.
• The Green Bay Packers (almost) always had the same starting quarterback.
• They never heard an attendant ask “Want me to check under the hood?”
• Soft drink refills have always been free.
• There have always been charter schools.
• Off-shore oil drilling in the United States has always been prohibited.
• 98.6 F or otherwise has always been confirmed in the ear.
• Muscovites have always been able to buy Big Macs.

Christians Committing Sins
August 18th, 2008 under Christian Crap, ChristianWalk, Christianity, God, Hypocrisy, Politics, Walking Like Jesus. [ Comments: 1 ]

commandments.jpgLast time I checked, the command NOT to bear false witness is still one of the Ten Commandments. I’m no Old Testament scholar, but I think that’s one of the Old Testament commands that still applies (Hope the crawfish prohibition doesn’t!).

Anyway, I just received an email that was critical of Obama in one of those ridiculous claims. I went to Snopes.com, copied the link that explained that the claim was false and sent it back to the sender. I should have also quoted the Scripture Exodus 20:16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

I didn’t. I didn’t want to look like a jerk. But then again, wouldn’t somebody who claims to be a Christian that spreads false information about someone be considered a jerk? I’m not sure. But according to Exodus 20:16, someone who spreads lies about someone else is considered a sinner. Before you send crap to your email list (whether it’s about McCain, Obama, Hillary or W), please check it out, otherwise you are sinning against God. As a theologian, I know that God don’t like that!

Bank Robbing Baptist Minister
August 15th, 2008 under Baptists, crime. [ Comments: 1 ]

faith-bag.jpgJim Creason, the minister of music in a small Baptist church in Edison Georgia, told police that money troubles drove him to rob a bank at gunpoint recently.

Creason robbed the HeritageBank of the South of more than $36,000. The minister wasn’t very smart.

“He had come to the bank earlier “under the pretense” of opening a checking account, and he provided bank officials with his new address and copies of his driver’s license and Social Security card, Vick said.”

Also, the bank manager knew Creason because Creason’s ex-wife had worked at the branch. He knew many of the employees there and called many of them by name during the robbery.

“I guess he got nervous and left,” said Vick, who investigated the case. “He came back about 20 minutes later with a black bag that had ‘Faith’ written on it.

Members at a church where Creason formerly served as an associate pastor said that they would have helped Creason if he had asked them for help.

So sad.

Crawfishing!
August 15th, 2008 under New Orleans, Politics. [ Comments: none ]

Angry Crawfish!
For you out-of-towners, here’s a definition of “crawfishing.”

“A number of people listed as members of the “Excellence in Recovery Host Committee, ” which is giving Nagin the award, said they didn’t know the mayor was being feted.”

Seems the folks listed on the last post didn’t really know what they were doing! Seems kind of strange that such prominent people could be fooled like this doesn’t it?

Well, anyway, it’s good keep the brand out there isn’t it C Ray?

We had to do something about that Mandeville mayor getting all that press coverage didn’t we?

Still…Congratulations are in order for the folks listed below. You make us so proud!

Mr Deity and the Really Big Favor

Sometimes Christians forget about the foolishness of the cross!

1 Corinthians 1:18: For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

George Bush Hates Animals
August 12th, 2008 under Bush, Environment, violence. [ Comments: none ]

New Orleans ProtestFor a while during his presidency, I thought George Bush was simply stupid. Now, not so much. I think he’s evil. He probably gets some of it from his mom (No, some of us will never forget).

Let’s see supply-side fans. How’s the economy since the most corporation-friendly president has been in office? Seems W has now decided that endangering the lives of people isn’t enough.

The Bush administration yesterday proposed a regulatory overhaul of the Endangered Species Act to allow federal agencies to decide whether protected species would be imperiled by agency projects, eliminating the independent scientific reviews that have been required for more than three decades.

I can’t wait to see what other brilliant stuff he decides to do before he leaves office!
