Obama/McCain Turning the Tables
September 22nd, 2008 under Politics. [ Comments: none ]

My friend Michael has a great post about the presidential election. I wish I shared his optimism about it. It’s a great read, please check it out. A couple of his points are below:

* What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review while Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class at Annapolis (the U.S. Naval Academy)?

* What if McCain had remained faithful and married to his first wife while Obama had left Michelle after she was no longer pretty due to a car accident and married a beautiful, wealthy, woman with political connections? (Actually, this double-standard on whose private life counts as “defending family values,” while breaking them and who is considered a threat to those values while embodying them is also a Republican-Democratic double standard and not just a racial double standard.)

* What if Michelle Obama had not only become addicted to painkillers, but illegally obtained them through her charitable organization as Cindy McCain has?

* What if Cindy McCain had graduated from Harvard Law School and quit corporate law to better help poor families?

* What if Obama had been a member of the “Keating Five” Savings and Loan scandal (which caused a previous economic meltdown and government bailout) as John McCain was? What if hundreds of lobbyists, including for enemy nations like Iran, staffed the Obama campaign the way they do McCain’s?

The little woman and I took a scooter ride to look at Banksy‘s art in New Orleans.

We ate a Shrimp poboy at Parkway Tavern:

It was really cool. Since we were in the 9th ward I also took a few pics of the houses that Brad Pitt built:

You can see my Banksy pics here.

DNC Platform Committee Member Supporting McCain
September 18th, 2008 under Politics. [ Comments: none ]

From the Chicago Tribune:

Lynn Forester de Rothschild, a top Hillary Clinton fundraiser and member of the Democratic National Committee’s Platform Committee, supports John McCain, his campaign says.

Rothschild has said she thinks Barack Obama is arrogant and has difficulty connecting with average Americans.

Rothschild is a member of the DNC’s Democrats Abroad chapter and splits her time living in London and New York. She was one of Clinton’s top fundraisers, bringing in more than $100,000 for her presidential campaign. She built a multimillion-dollar telecommunications company before marrying international banker Sir Evelyn de Rothschild.

Rothschild plans to announce her support for McCain on Wednesday in Washington.

She said in a CNN interview:

“This is a hard decision for me personally because frankly I don’t like him,” she said of Obama in an interview with CNN’s Joe Johns. “I feel like he is an elitist. I feel like he has not given me reason to trust him.”

Two thoughts:
1. The head of a multimillion dollar company married to a Rothschild calling Obama an elitist? Give me a friggin’ break!

2. You don’t trust him? Do you trust Palin? You honestly trust McCain?

One of my favorite lines is from Men in Black. Tommy Lee Jones says, “A person is smart, but people are stupid.” Lynn Forester de Rothschild just proved Tommy Lee wrong. If that’s all you’ve got—some crappy Fox talking point—you don’t deserve to be a DNC committee member.

Can’t connect with average Americans? Guess the rich white guy with more houses than he can count and just yesterday said our economy is sound connects with average Joe!

God help us.

Exploiting the Suffering of Others
September 12th, 2008 under Christianity, ChristianWalk, God, Politics, poor, Walking Like Jesus. [ Comments: 1 ]

I saw this pick today on Snopes.com. It’s a great site for checking all those goofy emails I get about Obama!

One of the lines from the Snopes article is this:

“I hope this picture will always serve as a reminder to us how fortunate we are and that we must never take things for granted.”

I would like to say that I was shocked at the above statement, but most might not even see the problem with it. I guess that’s why Rudy “9/11” Giuliani isn’t such a joke that Republicans would ignore him.

The fact is that many are so self-centered that they can only see the suffering of others as an opportunity to exploit it or an opportunity to express thanks that we are not like them.

Thankfully, that’s not Jesus’ approach. In John 9:4, Jesus says, “As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.” This is Jesus’ response to seeing a blind man. His disciples are looking for someone to blame, but Jesus sees it as an opportunity to reach out and touch the afflicted.

That’s why I’m pessimistic about the Fall election. Rather than seeing this election as an opportunity to provide health care for the poor, take care of our world, and become a more hopeful, helpful nation, my guess is that Americans will once more be motivated by fear and greed. Dang I’m pessimistic! Of course all of this will be couched in the idolatry of Nationalism and self-righteousness.
